20th Century Farewell

LONG DISTANCE RUNNER

Well, you'd been running to be running
And somehow that's all right
Cause you were coming to the edge
So you set yourself in flight

But now your heart is the drummer
Let it let through the Summer
And be a long distance runner

Well, you'd been looking for some lightning
And waiting for the flash
Just standing in the open
Till it was time to make your dash

But now your heart is the drummer
Let it beat through the Summer
And be a long distance runner

Well, everybody's try to tell you
You can run but you can't hide
But till you found a beat to propel you
So that you could hit your stride

You were your own competition
But scared you'd fall behind
Cause you were racing with yourself
Just to top your own best time

But now your heart is the drummer
Let it beat through the Summer
And be a long distance runner

Break

So now you're running to be running
And it's begun to hurt real good
Everybody gets a second wind
And though you thought you never would

Now your heart is the drummer
Let it beat through the Summer
And be a long distance runner

EARLY MORNING SKYLINE

Early morning skyline moving like an airplane
Flying past my windshield as I drive
Gotta keep moving gonna keep searching
Pushing straight on through till I arrive

I'm always looking but never finding
Even when I think I see it clear
I'm always reaching but never quite grasping
Even when I feel it drawing near

I rode an all night highway toward another town
In the rearview mirror I watched the sun go down
Through the darkest hours I was still awake
I saw the full moon rising across a frozen lake

Early morning skyline hiding all the people
Who'll be waking up soon to work from nine to five
But I'm in motion to difference destination
Pushing straight on through till I arrive

Break

Early morning skyline moving like an airplane
Flying past my windshield as I drive
Gonna keep moving gotta keep searching
Pushing straight on through till I arrive

Yeah, pushing straight on through

HEAVEN IN THE WINDSHIELD

We were on our way to Memphis
The sun was going down
And we were falling for each other
We were getting out of town
It looked like heaven in the windshield
I bet I never get that close again

Heaven in the windshield
And the truth hot on our trail
We were crazy for each other
So sure love would prevail
We were looking at the promised land
I bet I never get that close again

Once in every lifetime
It was that kind of thing
Every time I looked at her
I could hear the angels sing
It was no common case of lovestruck
Might be how it sounds
But tell me why my heart breaks
When that memory comes around

Yeah, we were on our way to Memphis
And for a moment time stood still
It made a diamond in my memory
Can't fade it never will
We were just this side of paradise
And I bet I never get that close again

Break

Once in every lifetime
It was that kind of thing
Every time she looked at me
I heard the angels sing
It was no common case of lovestruck
Might be how it sounds
But tell me why my heart breaks
When that memory comes around

We were on our way to Memphis

The sun was going down
And we were falling for each other
We were getting out of town
It looked like heaven in the windshield
And I bet I never get that close again

Heaven in the windshield
And I bet I never get that close again

CINNAMON GIRL

I wanna live with a cinnamon girl
I could be happy the rest of my life with a cinnamon girl

A dreamer of pictures I run in the night
You see us together chasing the moonlight my cinnamon girl

Pa send me money now I need to make it some how
I need another chance I see your baby loves to dance

Ten silver saxes a bass with a bow
The drummer relaxes and waits between shows for his cinnamon girl

Pa sent me money now I need to make it some how
I need another chance I see your baby loves to dance

THAT OLD TWO SEATER

What a sight it was to see my mother would reply
When I asked her to recall how granddad used to fly
That biplane built for two he turned his kids into a crew
And told them what to do just as if he really knew

When the auctioneer yelled sold imagine his surprise
Henry'd just bid as a joke and said I wonder if it flies
But hadn't grandma said I'd love to look down from the sky
So what could Sarah do when Henry said let's try

So with Sarah round in front and Henry at the stick
He'd call, "come on Mother, crank, and run get in here quick"
And at first they'd circle slow waving to their children down below
And then off those two would go to make that old two seater roll

Break

And when they'd come in for a landing
Their mother'd call her brothers from the barn
That old airplane still was standing
In the field when they inherited the farm

Last Fall the airbase had a show and the Thunderbirds were there
So I took my kids to see their ballet in the air
But before the main event I told a story so they'd know
I'd really brought them to the show to see an old two seater roll

CAR ON FIRE

Well I remember the day we met a long, long time ago
When I was young and wild and you were young and wilder

Call for the hook and ladder cause down in the very last row
There was a car on fire the flames getting higher and higher
And higher and higher

Now it's too late fireman too late
Love's in a hurry love won't wait
Too late fireman too late
Love's in a hurry love won't wait

You should've told me the day we met
Our love getting higher and higher
You should've told me but you sold me a car on fire

Call for the hook and ladder we gotta get on with the show
But my heart's on fire the flames getting higher and higher
And higher and higher

Chorus

Break

Yeah it's too late fireman too late love's in hurry and love won't wait
Too late fireman too late love's in hurry and love won't wait
Too late fireman too late love's in hurry and love won't wait

Too late fireman too late when love's in hurry hell love won't wait
